Understanding the basics of franchise opportunities

A review on franchises.

In the last 50 odd years franchises have become the way to do business. Today more and more people are looking for a proven business model that works and will pay the huge costs associated with buying a franchise simply to have peace of mind that at least 98% they have a chance to succeed in business.

This business model is very attractive to people who have been paid a lump sum in early retirement and still want to be in the work force but find that they are too old to get a job. Most often they opt to buy themselves a job by buying into a franchise. In Australia I see men and women in their late forties buying lawn mowing franchises for this reason.

Some of these people were white collar workers and seem to like the migration into a outdoor blue collar self employed working situation. But its hard work sometimes if you buy a franchise in a hot country like Australia.

The failure rate in franchises is low and you can make an above award income if you choose the correct franchise to buy into. The franchises to choose from are many and varied. Here are some popular franchises: dog grooming, bakery, lawn mowing, car detailing, various food franchises such as Jolibee and MacDonald’s, etc.

Though they may be very successful, it’s not for everyone as the set up costs are huge starting from tens of thousands of dollars to well over the million dollar mark. Not everyone has 25,000 dollars to a million to invest and this quite often is a huge hurdle to cross. Though the cheaper ones are the more popular franchises.

Though you do get all the business expertise required, you still have all the business worries such as competing with other well known brands, hiring and training staff, rents, loans and advertising costs that are related to small or medium to large businesses. There is no guarantee for success and the worry is if you don’t make the franchise a success, then the franchiser could withdraw the franchise and you stand to lose everything invested.

How does franchises compare to network marketing?
