I have just come back to Brisbane in Australia and am sad to see how so many small business owners are suffering right now with the GFC that started in 2009. The Global Financial Crisis has left a path of financial hardship and topped up by the floods seen in Brisbane in January 2011 has left the place struggling. Many small business owners are up against the wall struggling to pay landlords the rent.

Making Extra Money: The question on many people’s minds is how to make extra money while still holding down a regular job or business. There are quite a few options open to us to look at on how to make extra cash as long as we are willing to find out about them. These options on making extra income are relatively simple though may not be as easy as you think when it comes to making extra money part time. Why is this so?

The reason being most people either are too fixed in their ways to want to change or feel they just don’t have the ability to do something outside their area of expertise where they need to earn more money is concerned. I feel most people fall in the later category as failure is something we get so scared of as we get older.

But isn’t “Failure” a part of success or the stepping stone to success.

How I Turned Failure Into Success In Brisbane

I have a short story on my life to share on why we should not procrastinate where making extra money is concerned. I hope this example will help people in Australia to realize that they should try to have a back-up plan to earn more money now, instead of waiting for things to happen as they want them to. I go by the saying “Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes“. So is making extra money, make the change now!

Now my brother runs a small Spar Super Mart in Brisbane’s Northside. He and his wife were so excited 3 years ago when they signed the lease and bought the business for just under $300,000 dollars from a couple who wanted to move away and settle in New Zealand. As we all know these super markets have long working hours and my brother was opening the shop up at 5.30 am in the morning and at 8 pm at night either he or his wife would shut shop. It was good in the beginning and they were happy for a few months but things were to change. Circumstance outside their circle of influence would soon create problems in business which would soon start to run their lives. The Global Financial Crisis was to come!

When he bought the shop it was easy to get finance  in 2008 as the GFC had not started and banks were open to lending people capital for small business. In a few months however business started to slip and he started to lay people off and do more and more of the work. Soon the income from the shop was not enough to pay for the rent so he has had to use savings to prop up the rent each month.

Mid 2010 his wife had to find a job as an employee to help with their home expenses. This family once had a fantastic lifestyle, free from stress and had lots of money and had the time for family and friends. Today they are stressed and feeling lost as there is no one to turn too for help. They have tried to sell the business but as banks are no longer giving money to small business they just cannot get a buyer to take the business of them.

Unfortunately my brother is either too tired to look right now at options or is too frighten to make a change until his business is sold.

Can you imagine that a dream like this going sour and taking all your life savings down the drain. Today as I write this post, they have lost over 200 K AUD in savings. Incidently this happened to me in 1997 as well, just 14 years ago where I lost 20 years of hard work in under 18 months when my restaurant went broke.

.What I did Different Back In 1997 As Compared to My Brother!

When business was bad and I could not see a way to get out of the rut I had found myself in, I started to look for a way out. I read books on how to make extra income. I found time out to go for free seminars to educate myself. I knew that there were answers and i just had to find them. They were not going to look for me.

The first book I read back then that made a big impact on me was Robert Kiyosaki’s book, RICH DAD POOR DAD in 1999.

As I had lost all my life savings back then I did not have many options other than going an getting a job. But luck was on my side as business contacts helped me get established once again and I was able to pay each of them off within 2 years by end of 2001. But I was not happy with myself as I knew that I could lose all I had again if I was not careful. So I kept of looking.

Robert Kiyosaki’s book stuck in my mind and I started to look around for different ways to dig myself out of the financial mess I had found myself in. If I did not do something fast my marriage too would be in trouble. I wanted to have time as well as money.

I looked as real estate but that was hard as I had no money to put down as a deposit. I also looked at Option Trading as a solution as I learnt that people could make a lot of money with a small trading balance. That is true but trading is a double edge sword. You can loose as much as you make.

I had learnt though Kiyosaki’s books and tapes that one viable low risk business to look at is network marketing. I remember one sentence in the book mentioning that network marketing is a 5 to 8 year business and can become very big over a number of years. He was open to say that people discount the power of network marketing as they want earn big on day one. And Network Marketing is big business.

I wanted big business with low risk and long term residual income. So what is residual income? I will explain soon what it is.

Today 8 years from my joining my company in network marketing, I am proud to say I have replaced my income completely. The best part is that this income is passive or residual and is growing each month and each year. This is so exciting.

What is Residual income?

It is a fancy word for income that keeps coming in week after week, month after month even if you stop working. Not everyone enjoys passive income. The people that do are successful actors, singers, and property owners are a few examples. Network marketing companies offer people to build businesses of distribution that could potentially give the individual residual income.
